History of Bhimashankar Fort

It is believed that the sweat fallen from Lord Shiva made the river Bhimarathi. Temple of Bhimashankar is form the Hemad Panthi style and around 1200 -1400 years old. The roof of the temple is decorated with beautiful paintings and beautiful carved statues. This temple was formed during the war of 'Bhima' and 'Shiva' when Shiva killed Bhima he turned him into ashes, on the request of all the gods lord Shiva transformed into Jyotirlinga of Bhimashankara
In the front of the temple there is iron casted bell hung from the temple in 1729.A Deepmala(Lamppost)has an height of 20-25 feet is situated in the temple. The Bhima River starts here at Bhimashankar. 'Bhima' was named to the river Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur.
Gupt Bhimashankar
There is a water sculpted Shiva Linga in the waterfall which is called as Gupt Bhimashankar it starts its route near the Ram temple we reach the thick jungle in 25 mins and the temple. There are waterfalls in this region in monsoons.

Shivneri Fort 
This fort is at a tallness of 3500 ft and medium level trek. Shivneri is the fort on which the conception of Shivaji Maharaj occurred. He spent his youth on Shivneri fort. There was a 'Shivai' Temple on the fort by which Shivaji Maharaj was named as 'Shivba'. Shivaji Maharaj learnt his fighting aptitudes on this fort. The Shape of the fort is similar to a shaft and triangular which is pointing towards north. Shivaji Maharaj held the fort from the fort allowed to Shivaji's grandfather maloji Bhosale and he passed it to Shahaji Bhosale in the year 1599 AD, in the end Shivaji Maharaj was conceived on Shivneri fort.
The fort was fabricated to Guard the Junnar city and Naneghat. South side of the fort has a wide base of the fort while on the north side has a tight point, on the fort there are seven doors (Darwaja) in which fifth door is reinforced with hostile to elephant's spikes. There are numerous ponds and reservoirs on the fort, from which two biggest storages are named as ganga and jamuna, however these days just few of them are staying on the fort.On one side of the fort there is a mosque of mughals while demolished steady on opposite side of the fort. The houses were restored again and the statues of Shivaji and Jijabai called shiv Kunj are additionally restored where Shivaji Maharaj was conceived in February 1630 AD. Before this fort was manufactured by Sathavanas and was called as 'Shivneri hills'.Three sides of the fort were incorporated with rock holes proving as they are buddhist related. Fort was with the yadavas, Bahamanis and the Mughals after Satavahanas. In 1632 Shivaji Maharaj left the fort through which mughals picked up the fort and Shivaji Maharaj couldn't take back the fort.

At the north side of Junnar Shivneri caves are situated around 3 kilometres from Junnar city. It is located on Shivneri hills.
Lenyadri Caves
Lenyadri caves are approximately 6 to 7 kms from Shivneri fort. They are the series of the Buddhist caves. In the caves there is the famous temple of god Ganesha one of Ashtavinayak Ganpatis.
