History of Ghosalgad Fort
Fort Avchitgad and Fort Ghosalgad are located close to the
city of Roha. Fort Ghosalgad may have
been constructed to keep a watch on the business & exchange exercises which
were enrouted through Tamhanghat.
This way passed through Janjira, Talgad, Ghosalgad,
Tamhan ghat, Ghangad was thought to be a
simple way to transport the products to the urban communities in ghat zone.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj caught this fort and renamed it as "Veergad".
According to the Treaty of Purandar with Mughals (Mirza
Raje Jaisingh understood an essential part in making Shivaji Maharaj sign this decision).
Shivaji Maharaj captured 12 forts under his rule of which Ghosalgad was one of

No reports are available so far to know who has constructed
Ghosalgad. On the other hand, in the 16th Century this fort was under
Nizamshah's rule. In 1648, the fort was captured over by Marathas.
As indicated by Sabhasad Bakhar, Raghunath Ballal (Korde)
Sabnis VII took 5000 equipped warriors and had walked towards Danda Rajapur,
and won the area of Danda Rajapuri, Tale, Ghosale and the close-by
seaside zone was under the control of Marathas.
In 1659, Siddhi attempted to catch Ghosalgad, however when he heard
the news of Afzal Khan's death by Shivaji Maharaj,he withdrew his armed
force.Later this stronghold was under the supervision of Siddhi, Angre, and
Marathas. In 1818 Col. Prauther won this fort.
